The main driver needs a credit card in their own name with enough balance to cover the deposit, a full driving licence (the same for every additional driver) and the rental voucher from your booking.

The fuel policy says how you pay for fuel and whether the tank must be full when you return the car. Each rental company has its own — you will find it in the terms and conditions, on your voucher and in the rental agreement.

Prepaid and partially prepaid bookings can have cancellation fees that depend on how close to pick-up you cancel. Check the exact terms before you pay.

Look at the excess — the amount you pay if the car is damaged. Compare it with extra cover options before you reach the desk, where add-ons are usually more expensive.

Walk around the car, photograph any scratches or dents and make sure they are noted on the rental agreement. Do the same when you return it.

Automatic cars, large family cars and summer dates sell out first. Booking ahead gives you more choice and usually a better price.
