What to check before you book a cabin — and how to avoid the most common cruise surprises.

01 Choose your cabin wisely

Inside cabins are the cheapest, balconies cost more but add space and views. Cabins in the middle of the ship and on lower decks move less — a good choice if you are prone to seasickness.

02 Check what the fare includes

Most fares cover the cabin, main restaurants and entertainment. Drinks packages, speciality dining, Wi-Fi, gratuities and shore excursions are usually extra — add them up before comparing.

03 Watch for port fees and gratuities

Port taxes and daily service charges can add a noticeable amount per person. Compare the total price for all travellers, not just the headline fare.

04 Arrive a day early

The ship will not wait for a delayed flight. Flying in the day before embarkation gives you a buffer and a relaxed start to the trip.

05 Book shore excursions with care

Excursions booked with the cruise line cost more, but the ship waits if the tour runs late. With independent tours, leave plenty of time to be back on board.

06 Check documents and insurance

Some itineraries need visas or a passport valid for months after the trip. Travel insurance with medical cover at sea is strongly recommended — treatment on board is expensive.
